The acquisition of Microsoft Activision may be one step closer to reality very soon. Earlier this year, Microsoft made a startling announcement that it was planning to acquire Activision for nearly $70 billion. It was heartbreaking news in the gaming industry as it is the biggest acquisition in gaming history and will give Microsoft ownership of Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and many other major franchises. The deal was met with scrutiny, and while many people are optimistic about the deal, politicians and other powerful figures have expressed concern about Microsoft swallowing the gaming giants left and right. Some have suggested the deal won’t go through, but Warren Buffett’s company, Berkshire Hathaway, is betting a lot on the deal.
With that said, the acquisition is close to a major achievement soon. According to a new report from Dealseaker (via Alpha search), Microsoft responded to the FTC’s second request for documents and information in the Activision deal. as such Referred to by Real Mi CentralIf the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) does not request any additional information within the next 30 days, the deal will be automatically approved by the US government agency. That doesn’t mean Xbox will automatically take full ownership of the company, though, as UK regulators still have to do their due diligence as well. However, the FTC is a major player when it comes to these types of acquisitions and it bodes well for the future of this deal if it agrees to it.
With that said, this is all just guesswork and only uses the rules posed to make a possible timeline. Microsoft and Activision previously stated that they expect to close the deal by summer 2023 if all goes well. It could happen much sooner than that if the FTC and others start giving their consent. Only time will tell how it goes, but these agencies are obligated to make sure they get everything they need for a deal of this magnitude, which may take longer than expected.
